Element: An element is the smallest part of an object. Each element has its own characteristics that can be used to describe the properties of an object. The atomic structure of the element defines its atomic number and the number of electrons in its atom. Elements can be made up of more than one type of element and there are five different types of atoms.

Carbon: A carbon atom is electrically neutral. There are two forms of carbon, namely graphite and diamond. Diamond is the heaviest and is also the strongest of all the types of carbon atoms. Because of this characteristic, diamond is the material used to make diamond rings.
Hydrogen: A hydrogen atom has three protons and one electron. The electron is held between the two protons by an electron hole in the atom’s atomic structure. When the hydrogen atom is excited, it loses its electrons and becomes a proton, thus converting to a molecule.
Oxygen: An oxygen atom consists of one proton and one electron. It is positively charged and is the most common element in the universe. When an atom has two protons and one electron, it is positively charged. When the atom has two electrons and a proton, it is negatively charged. When an atom has an electron and a proton, it is uncharged.
Particles of the air include nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, ozone layer, carbon dioxide and water. A molecule of all these compounds is made up of an atom with four protons, two electrons and one electron hole.
