Students who are eligible for admission to CAPP universities must fulfill one of two requirements: Class rank at or above the 75th percentile in high school, or a grade point average (GPA) below the 6.5 threshold. In most cases, a student must have a high school GED to apply. A high school transcript is needed, but students may obtain it from a state Department of Education office. Students who are accepted by a CAPP university are usually able to complete their academic programs within the time limit specified by their institution, however.
There are several advantages to attending a CAPP university. The courses required to earn a degree at a university often mirror those taken at CAPP schools, allowing students to continue their education at the same pace as other students who have completed their degrees at community colleges. Also, students at a CAPP university can expect to receive the same support and guidance available at a four-year college.
Some students may not be able to take classes at a CAPP university because of a medical emergency. Medical situations are often difficult to predict, and students may need to drop classes or be moved to another campus to take care of their medical situation. In these instances, students must contact the dean of their respective university to find out when they will be able to enroll for classes.
Students who cannot attend a CAPP school may consider working towards their degrees. Students may take a job at a grocery store delivery service to earn a high school diploma in addition to their associate’s degree. Working toward a diploma while attending a college or university gives students time to learn about the area of study and gives them more responsibility while still getting an education.
Students who are unable to get into a CAPP university because of a medical situation should consider attending an online university. Online universities generally provide students with the ability to participate in college courses with minimal travel time. Students who attend an accredited online colleges have completed their degree in less than four years compared to five to seven years at traditional colleges.
Online colleges tend to cost more than other forms of colleges, but there is often a waiver program available to students who can qualify. Those interested in this option should check with their financial aid administrator. Some students may be able to use their FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) to qualify for the program.
The Department of Education website lists accredited colleges, universities, and trade schools that offer the CAPP program. Students should check to see if they have a local university that offers a certification program offered through the university. Many online schools offer additional services like help with finances and financial assistance.
To become a certified nursing assistant, a high school diploma is needed. The two most popular programs offered are the BSN or Bachelor of Science in Nursing and the MSN or Master of Science in Nursing. Other students can pursue a career path in pediatrics or geriatrics or even find employment in hospitals.
The curriculum of a program at a CAPP is similar to a traditional four-year university. Students must complete core courses in subjects like biology, chemistry, mathematics, nursing, physical science, psychology, and English composition. They will also learn about nutrition. The CAPP program will also include electives such as courses on public administration, health promotion, and ethics.
Students must also complete an internship before they can enroll in the CAPP. program.
